Quick Answer

To weather MDF terrain walls realistically, start with a base coat, then apply washes for shadows, drybrush for highlights, and add subtle damage with sponging or stippling. Focus on edges and recesses where wear naturally occurs.

Why Weathering Matters for MDF Terrain

Weathering transforms flat MDF walls into believable structures that tell a story of age, battle, or exposure. Without it, even well-painted terrain can look like a toy. The goal is to mimic natural wear: dust settling on horizontal surfaces, paint chipping at corners, and dirt accumulating in cracks.

Step-by-Step Weathering Process

  1. Step 1: Seal and Prime: Apply a thin coat of PVA glue or spray primer to the raw MDF. This prevents the wood from soaking up paint unevenly and gives a consistent base. Use a dark grey or brown primer for a natural shadow start. Skipping the seal can cause paint to lift later. Always seal first.
  2. Step 2: Base Coat: Paint the entire wall with a matte acrylic color that matches your desired stone or plaster. Two thin coats work better than one thick layer. For stucco walls, a warm off-white or light sand is ideal. Thin coats preserve detail. Thick paint can fill in brick lines.
  3. Step 3: Apply a Wash: Mix a dark brown or black wash (or use a ready-made one) and brush it into recesses, corners, and along the base. Let it pool slightly, then wipe excess from flat areas. This creates depth and simulates grime. Too much wash can stain the whole surface. Work in small sections.
  4. Step 4: Drybrush Highlights: Load a dry brush with a lighter shade of your base color, then wipe most of it off on a paper towel. Lightly drag the brush across raised edges, bricks, and corners. This brings out texture and suggests sun-bleached areas. Use a soft, flat brush for broad walls and a small round brush for detailed corners.
  5. Step 5: Add Chipping and Damage: Dip a piece of sponge or a stiff stippling brush into a dark brown or rust color, dab off most of it, then lightly tap along edges and corners. Focus on high-traffic areas like doorways and base edges. Less is more. You can always add more chips, but removing them is hard.
  6. Step 6: Final Dusting: Mix a very light sand or beige with water to a milky consistency and lightly brush it onto lower sections and horizontal surfaces. This simulates settled dust. Alternatively, use a soft pastel powder brushed on dry. Avoid dusting the entire wall evenly. Real dust accumulates in patches.
