Learn how to place and activate Caltrops, Mines, Flamethrower, Oil, Smoke, and Glue templates from Set 1 in your Gaslands races.
Quick Answer
Use the Gaslands Effect Template Set 1 to mark hazard areas on your racing track. Each double-sided template corresponds to a specific weapon or obstacle—just place it on the table and follow the rules for activation.
Why Use Effect Templates for Racing?
Effect templates save time and reduce arguments during a game. Instead of measuring distances or drawing lines on the table, you place a pre-cut MDF template where the effect lands. The Gaslands Effect Template Set 1 covers the most common hazard types: Caltrops, Mines, Flamethrower, Oil, Smoke, and Glue.
Each template is double-sided, giving you two different effects on one piece. This makes it easy to switch between scenarios without carrying extra gear.
How to Use the Templates in a Race
- 1. Choose the Correct Side: Before the game, pick which effect you want to use and turn the template to show that side. For example, flip the double-sided Caltrops/Mines template so the Caltrops artwork faces up. Common mistake: forgetting to flip the template before placing it. Check the artwork each time you deploy a new effect.
- 2. Place the Template on the Table: When a weapon or hazard is activated, put the template on the table exactly where the effect would land. For a dropped Caltrops template, place it behind the vehicle that dropped them. For a Flamethrower template, position it so the flame area covers the target zone. Check that the template lies flat and does not overlap other templates or terrain pieces.
- 3. Apply the Game Rules for That Effect: Refer to the Gaslands rulebook for the specific effect. For example, a vehicle entering a Smoke template gets a +1 penalty to its next Attack dice roll. A vehicle on an Oil template must make a Skill check or skid. The template only marks the area—the rules tell you what happens. Keep the rulebook handy; the template itself does not list the effects.
- 4. Remove or Replace as the Game Continues: Effects like Smoke and Oil usually last only one round. After the round ends, lift the template off the table. For persistent hazards like Mines, leave the template in place until a vehicle triggers it or the scenario says otherwise. If you are using multiple templates, stack them on a side tray when not in use to keep the playing area clear.
