I was a bit worried the MDF would feel flimsy, but the 1/4-inch border is actually really sturdy once you glue the base in. The slots hold my 20x20mm models snugly without being too tight.

Finally found a tray that actually fits my 20mm bases snugly without rattling around during transport. The 6.35mm border is just the right thickness to keep the minis secure. Going to order a second one.

Slots for 20x20mm bases lined up perfectly with zero wobble, and the 6.35mm frame height gives just enough lip to keep models secure. Took a bit of sanding on the edges to get a smooth fit, but once primed it holds its shape well.
